A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that free agent outfielder Jason Bay has reached a one-year contract with the Seattle Mariners.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because there was no announcement by the team.
The 34-year-old Bay is hoping to resurrect his career with the Mariners after three disappointing and injury-plagued seasons with the New York Mets.
Last month, Bay and the Mets agreed to terminate his contract with one guaranteed year remaining on his $66 million US, four-year contract. The agreement let the Mets spread out the $21 million they still owed him.
Bay hit .165 with eight home runs and 20 RBIs last season. He was slowed by concussions and rib injuries while with the Mets and played only 288 games in three years with them.
Bay is familiar with the Pacific Northwest. He grew up in British Columbia and went to Gonzaga in Spokane, Wash.
Blanton gets $15M from Angels
A person familiar with the negotiations says the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a $15 million, two-year contract with right-hander Joe Blanton.
Blanton's deal includes a team option for 2015, the person said Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal was pending a physical.
The Angels also agreed with reliever Sean Burnett on an $8 million, two-year deal, pending a physical. The 30-year-old left-hander was 1-2 with a 2.38 ERA in 70 games this year for the Washington Nationals. He joins a bullpen that already has added Ryan Madson to go along with incumbent closer Ernesto Frieri.
Madson is coming back from Tommy John surgery. If healthy, he could supplant Frieri as the team's closer.
White Sox sign Keppinger
A person familiar with the contract tells The Associated Press that versatile infielder Jeff Keppinger has reached agreement with the Chicago White Sox on a $12 million, three-year contract.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because there was no announcement by the team.
Keppinger hit .325 with a career-high nine home runs and 40 RBIs for Tampa Bay last season. The well-travelled 32-year-old is known for making contact and has more walks than strikeouts during his eight-year career with the Rays, San Francisco, Houston, Cincinnati, Kansas City and the Mets.
Keppinger is expected to play third base for the White Sox. Kevin Youkilis finished the season at that spot for Chicago last season, then became a free agent. The New York Yankees and Arizona also had been interested in Keppinger.
Orioles re-sign McLouth
A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that free agent outfielder Nate McLouth has rejoined the Baltimore Orioles with a one-year contract worth $2 million.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because there was no official announcement.
The 31-year-old McLouth revived his career with the Orioles last season. An NL All-Star in 2008, McLouth was cut by Pittsburgh in late May after hitting just .140 with two RBIs in 34 games.
Baltimore signed McLouth to a minor league deal in early June and promoted him to the majors two months later. He hit .268 with seven home runs and 18 RBIs, and helped spark the Orioles to an AL wild-card spot.
McLouth made $1.75 million last season. His new contract provides performance bonuses of $50,000 each for 300 and 350 plate appearances, and $100,000 each for 400, 450, 500 and 550 plate appearances.
D-Backs, Chavez agree to deal
The Arizona Diamondbacks and infielder Eric Chavez agreed to terms on a $3 million, one-year contract Wednesday, a person with knowledge of the negotiations said.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing had been finalized. Chavez's new deal is pending a physical. In addition, the Diamondbacks reached agreement on a one-year deal with catcher Wil Nieves, another person said on condition of anonymity because Nieves still needed to complete a physical to make it official.
The 34-year-old Chavez hit .281 with 16 homers in 278 at-bats for the New York Yankees, playing first and third base and at designated hitter.
Chavez was six-time Gold Glove third baseman with Oakland before injuries sidelined him for significant time for several years. But he found success in a limited role with New York this season, seeing more playing time after Alex Rodriguez broke his hand in late July.
Chavez, who lives in the Phoenix area, will likely serve in a reserve role for Arizona, which has Chris Johnson at third base and Paul Goldschmidt at first.
The 35-year-old Nieves, who wasn't tendered a contract by Arizona last week, batted .306 with a home run and three RBIs in 16 games for the D-backs in 2012.
Arizona claimed him off waivers from Colorado on Aug. 6. Nieves was designated for assignment by the Rockies after hitting .298 with one homer in 16 games with the Rockies and .306 with three homers in 111 at-bats for Triple-A Colorado Springs.
Choate joins Cardinals
A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that left-handed reliever Randy Choate and the St. Louis Cardinals have agreed to a $7.5 million, three-year contract.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity Wednesday because the agreement is subject to a physical before the deal can be finalized.
Choate had a 3.03 ERA and no record in 80 games this year, tying for the major league lead in pitching appearances. He held left-handed batters to a .158 average (16 for 101) and righties hit .325 against him (13 for 40).
Francis staying with Rockies
A person familiar with the negotiations says pitcher Jeff Francis is staying with the Colorado Rockies.
The 31-year-old left-hander has agreed to a one-year contract, the person said Wednesday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the deal had not yet been announced.
Francis, a native of North Delta, B.C., is 67-73 with a 4.86 ERA in 205 starts and one relief appearance during eight major league seasons — seven with Colorado and one with Kansas City. He was 6-7 with a 5.58 ERA in 24 big league starts this year after he spent the first two months of the season with Cincinnati's Triple-A farm team at Louisville.
A first-round draft pick in 2002, when he was selected ninth overall, Francis missed the 2009 season following shoulder surgery.
Rumours
New York Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey keeps drawing attention. He lives near the Opryland Hotel and dropped in for a visit, though there's no change in his situation — he wants a new contract, Boston and several other clubs want to trade for the NL Cy Young winner.
Also in the mix: Cleveland shortstop Asdrubal Cabrera, amid speculation Arizona is trying to get him in a multi-team swap.
