The Cincinnati Reds have agreed to a one-year deal, $3.06 million US deal with right-hander Mike Leake, avoiding salary arbitration with their fifth starter.

The deal on Wednesday leaves three Reds still facing arbitration: starters Mat Latos and Homer Bailey and outfielder Shin-Soo Choo.

Leake made $507,500 last season, when he went 8-9 with a 4.58 earned-run average in 30 starts, a career high. He asked for $3.5 million in arbitration, and the club offered $2.65 million. He will compete with left-hander Aroldis Chapman for a spot in the rotation. He will make an additional $25,000 if he reaches 180 innings pitched.

The Reds have their three most expensive arbitration cases still pending. Choo is seeking $8 million, Bailey $5.8 million and Latos $4.7 million.

The Reds have settled with outfielder Chris Heisey and reliever Alfredo Simon.

Nats sign Micah Owings to minor league deal

The Washington Nationals have agreed to terms with pitcher-turned-first baseman Micah Owings for a minor league contract with an invitation to major league spring training.

The 30-year-old Owings is a career .283 hitter in 219 plate appearances with nine home runs and 35 runs batted in.

He went 32-33 as a pitcher over six seasons with Arizona, Cincinnati and San Diego.

Brewers, Alex Gonzalez finalize contract

Shortstop Alex Gonzalez and the Milwaukee Brewers have finalized a $1.45 million, one-year contract.

The deal, agreed to Jan. 29 and completed Wednesday, allows Gonzalez to earn an additional $800,000 in performance bonuses: $100,000 each for 45, 60, 70 and 90 games played, and $100,000 apiece for 45, 60, 70 and 90 starts.

Gonzalez, 35, hit .259 last year in his first season with the Brewers and had four homers and 15 RBIs in 81 at-bats.

He took the spot on the 40-man roster of right-hander Fautino De Los Santos, who was claimed off waivers by the San Diego Padres. Milwaukee obtained the reliever from Oakland last July in the deal that sent catcher George Kottaras to the Athletics.

Albert Callaspo, Angels complete deal for almost $9M

Third baseman Albert Callaspo and the Los Angeles Angels have finalized a two-year contract worth $8,975,000.

The deal announced Tuesday calls for Callaspo to receive $4.1 million this year and $4,875,000 in 2014.

Callaspo hit .252 last year with 10 home runs and 53 RBIs. When arbitration figures were exchanged last month, he had asked for a raise from $3.15 million to $4.7 million and had been offered $3.65 million.

Luke Scott returns to Rays

Free-agent designated hitter Luke Scott has agreed to a $2.75 million, one-year contract with the Tampa Bay Rays.

Scott batted .229 with 14 homers and 55 RBIs in 96 games in a disappointing debut with the Rays last season, when he spent two stints on the disabled list due to back stiffness and a mild strain of his right oblique.

The Rays announced the deal on Wednesday. It includes $750,000 in performance bonuses based on plate appearances: $50,000 for 400, $150,000 for 450, $250,000 for 500 and $300,000 for 550.

Scott has spent parts of eight major league seasons with Houston, Baltimore and Tampa Bay. He's a .260 career hitter with 126 homers and 396 RBIs.
