The Detroit Tigers have agreed to a one-year, $6,725,000 contract with right-hander Max Scherzer and avoided salary arbitration.
Scherzer was 16-7 last season with a 3.74 ERA and struck out 231, a total that trailed only teammate Justin Verlander. He was 1-0 with a 2.08 ERA in the post-season, helping Detroit reach the World Series.
The Tigers acquired Scherzer after the 2009 season from Arizona as part of a three-team trade that sent Curtis Granderson to the New York Yankees and Edwin Jackson to the Diamondbacks. They also acquired Austin Jackson and Phil Coke in the deal. Scherzer has had a winning record in each of his three seasons with the Tigers and is 52-42 in his career.
Prospect Wil Myers joins Rays
Heralded prospect Wil Myers is among seven minor leaguers the Tampa Bay Rays have invited to major league spring training this month.
The 22-year-old was one of the key acquisitions in an off-season trade that sent pitchers James Shields and Wade Davis to the Kansas City Royals. Myers hit a combined .314 with 37 homers and 109 RBI in 134 games with Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha last season.
The Rays also invited first baseman-outfielder Leslie Anderson, infielder Cole Figueroa, right-handed pitchers Matt Nevarez and Jim Paduch and left-handed relievers Jim Patterson and Neil Schenk to big league camp. Pitchers and catchers report on Feb. 12.
A's acquire Jed Lowrie from Astros
The Oakland Athletics have acquired infielder Jed Lowrie and right-hander Fernando Rodriguez from the Houston Astros for first baseman Chris Carter and two minor leaguers.
Right-hander Brad Peacock and catcher Max Stassi also went to Houston in Monday's deal.
Lowrie batted .244 with 16 homers and 42 RBIs in 97 games with Houston, missing two months with ankle and thumb injuries. The Astros got rid of his $2.4 million salary for this season and will likely have the lowest payroll in the majors in 2013.
Rodriguez went 2-10 with a 5.37 ERA in 71 relief appearances last year with 78 strikeouts in 70 1-3 innings.
Carter batted .239 with 16 homers and 39 RBIs in 67 games with Oakland last year, platooning at first base with left-handed hitting Brandon Moss.
