Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista will miss the remaining 23 regular-season games, the team announced Wednesday.
The slugging right-fielder has been on the disabled list since Aug. 21 with a bone bruise in his left hip.
Bautista reportedly was told by New York-based hip specialist Dr. Bryan Kelly this week to rest an additional two weeks. The season ends Sept. 29.
"Just the timing of everything wasn't ideal," Bautista told reporters. "Obviously the fact that we're not in contention [for the playoffs] had to play a little bit in the decision making and the recommendations that the doctor has done. Just the combination of all the factors: timing wise, our team situation and the type of injury and the extent of the injury, everything was considered to make this decision."
Bautista added he expects to be healthy for spring training in February.
Toronto is last in the American League East with a 64-75 record, so there was no need to rush him back to game action.
The 32-year-old Bautista posted a .259 batting average in 118 games this season with 28 home runs and 78 runs batted in.
He was hampered in April by a sore back and his left Achilles bothered him in July but neither required DL stints.
Wrist surgery
Last season, Bautista missed the final two months with a wrist injury that required surgery.
After leading the major leagues with a club-record 54 home runs in 2010, Bautista has followed up that feat with 43, 27 and 28 long balls.
Despite Bautista's team-friendly contract, a five-year, $65-million US deal that is set to expire after the 2015 season but includes a $14-million team option for 2016, there were some in the baseball world, including CBCSports.ca baseball contributor Tom Dakers, who believed Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos should have dealt the player prior to the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
Bautista was excited to be a Blue Jay entering the 2013 campaign following Anthopoulos's roster overhaul that saw 2012 National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey and fellow pitchers Josh Johnson and Mark Buehrle join the starting rotation.
All-star shortstop Jose Reyes and free-agent outfielder Melky Cabrera were the other notable additions to a Toronto outfit that finished 73-89 in 2012.
But the aforementioned pitchers struggled from the outset, Johnson had two separate stints on the disabled list, Reyes severely sprained an ankle in a April 12 game at Kansas City and was sidelined three months, and Cabrera has been hampered with a sore knee that might spell the end of his first season in Toronto.
Cabrera, who was suspended 50 games a year ago for a doping violation, will be paid $8 million this season and next.
Anthopoulos and company have seen a .279 batting average, three homers and 30 RBIs in 88 games on their investment.
