Add a reserve infielder, perhaps an experienced type, to the list of the Toronto Blue Jays' off-season needs.
General manager Alex Anthopoulos on Tuesday said from the general managers' meetings in Orlando, Fla., that 37-year-old Mark DeRosa is retiring.
DeRosa signed a one-year contract with the Toronto in January and had a rebound season in 2013, hitting .235 in 88 games (204 at-bats) with seven home runs, 36 runs batted in and a .326 on-base percentage.
He batted .188 with six RBIs in 48 games in 2012 for the Washington Nationals.
"I walk away with tons of friends, hopefully the respect of my peers, tons of memories and proud of the fact that I was able to compete at the highest level in my profession for a long time," DeRosa, who recently had the $750,000 US option in his contract for 2014 picked up by the Jays, told reporters near the end of the regular season.
In 16 major league seasons, DeRosa had his most productive campaign in 2008 with the Chicago Cubs when he hit .285 with 21 homers, a career-high 87 RBIs and .376 OBP.
In 1,241 regular-season games, DeRosa posted a .268 average with 100 home runs and 494 RBIs. He has also played for the Atlanta Braves, Texas Rangers, Cleveland Indians, St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants.
