Yankees re-sign Derek Jeter for 1 year, $12M

Shortstop Derek Jeter is returning for a 20th season with the New York Yankees.

And he even managed to get a raise despite missing all but 17 games in the 2013 campaign.

The Yankees on Friday announced they had signed Jeter for one year and $12 million US, a raise of $4 million from his $8-million player option for 2014. The $8-million option escalated to $9.5 million because he won a Silver Slugger Award in 2012, when he led the major leagues with 216 hits.

"This entire season has been a nightmare for me physically," Jeter said after the Yankees said his season was over. "I truly believe with a full off-season, working out and getting my strength back that I can get back to doing what I always have."

Jeter, a five-time World Series champion and 13-time all-star, posted a .190 batting average this past season with a home run and seven runs batted in.

The 39-year-old will become the longest-tenured player in franchise history in his 2014 season debut, overtaking retired closer Mariano Rivera.

Jeter had four stints on the disabled list in 2013, one shy of matching his combined total from the previous 18 campaigns.

Jeter needed to be helped off the field at Yankee Stadium after he broke his left ankle Oct. 13, 2012, during the American League Championship Series opener against Detroit. While he vowed to be back for opening day, he was limited to five spring training games and 11 at-bats, stayed behind when the team broke camp for rehabilitation at New York's minor league complex in Tampa, Fla., and broke the ankle again.

He missed the 91 games of the season, then felt pain his right quadriceps when he returned July 11. He went back on the DL, returned July 28 for three games, then strained his right calf.

Back in the lineup on Aug. 26, he played through Sept. 7, when he left for a pinch-runner after singling against Boston. While scans of the left ankle were negative, the Yankees said four days later his season was over.

A career .312 hitter, he is ninth on baseball's all-time hits list with 3,316.

Jeter has posted eight seasons of 200 or more hits. The 11th captain in Yankees history has also been stellar in the field as an 11-time Gold Glove Award winner.

Jeter is one of only two players in Major League Baseball, along with Willie Mays, to record at least 3,000 hits, 250 home runs, 300 stolen bases and 1,200 RBIs.
