Pitcher Phil Hughes joins Twins: MLB signings

The Minnesota Twins have signed former New York Yankees right-hander Phil Hughes to a three-year, $24-million US contract.

The Twins reached agreement with Hughes last week and finished it on Thursday after the 27-year-old passed his physical. Hughes went 4-14 with a 5.19 ERA for the Yankees last season.

The Twins are hoping that a move out of hitter-friendly Yankee Stadium to spacious Target Field will help Hughes rediscover the promise he showed earlier in his career. Hughes was a first-round draft pick and an all-star in 2010.

Twins starters had the worst ERA in baseball last season, so GM Terry Ryan has been aggressive in trying to upgrade the staff.

The Twins signed right-hander Ricky Nolasco to a $49 million, four-year contract Tuesday.

Wilson, Dodgers strike deal: report

A person with knowledge of the negotiations says free-agent reliever Brian Wilson has agreed to terms on a $10 million US, one-year contract to stay with the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The deal is pending a physical, the person said Thursday, speaking on condition of anonymity because the team had not made an announcement regarding the quirky, bearded pitcher. Wilson's new contract includes an option for the 2015 season.

Wilson, a right-hander and the 2010 majors saves leader while with San Francisco, joined the National League West champion Dodgers last season after a second Tommy John elbow ligament replacement surgery. He missed almost the entire 2012 season when the Giants won their second World Series in three years.

Wilson went 2-1 with a 0.66 earned-run average in 18 outings this year for Los Angeles.

Red Sox lure Mujica: report

A person familiar with the deal tells The Associated Press that the Boston Red Sox have agreed with reliever Edward Mujica on a two-year deal.

The person spoke on the condition of anonymity Thursday because the deal was pending a physical and had not been announced. The 29-year-old Mujica gives the Red Sox some protection if soon-to-be 39-year-old closer Koji Uehara cannot repeat his 2013 performance next season.

Mujica was 2-1 with 37 saves and a 2.78 earned-run average for the National League champion St. Louis Cardinals last season. He made two appearances in the playoffs, giving up one run in two innings. He did not appear in the World Series against the Red Sox.

In an eight-year career, the right-handed Venezuelan has a 19-19 record with 41 saves and a 3.75 ERA.

Bloomquist back with Mariners

Utility player Willie Bloomquist has officially signed a two-year contract with the Seattle Mariners, bringing him back to the team he started his major league career with.

Seattle announced the deal on Thursday after Bloomquist passed a physical.

Bloomquist spent the past three seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, appearing in 225 games and hitting .289 with 36 doubles and 63 runs batted in over that time. Last season with Arizona, he appeared in 48 games and had 139 at-bats.

The 36-year-old Bloomquist spent the first seven seasons of his career with the Mariners. His high point came in 2006 when Bloomquist appeared in 102 games for Seattle. He spent the 2009-10 seasons with Kansas City and Cincinnati before joining the Diamondbacks.
