So much for Brandon Morrow's injury-free 2014 season.
The oft-injured Toronto Blue Jays right-hander is on the 15-day disabled list five weeks into the campaign with a strained right index finger.
Morrow was hurt in the fifth and final inning of his outing Friday against the hometown Pittsburgh Pirates. He finished the inning and told the training staff of the injury when he returned to the dugout.
"He said he just felt something pop," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said.
Toronto recalled reliever Chad Jenkins from triple-A Buffalo. In his only prior appearance for the Blue Jays this season, he allowed three runs and five hits in 1 2/3 innings April 26 against Boston.
Morrow's 2013 season was cut short by an impinged nerve in his right forearm. A torn oblique (rib cage) muscle cost him more than two months of the 2012 season.
The 29-year-old has a 1-2 record in six starts this season with a 5.93 earned-run average.
In Friday's 6-5 loss in Pittsburgh, Morrow allowed 11 hits and three runs (all earned) in a no-decision. He has allowed 30 hits in 27 1/3 innings this season and walked 17.
Morrow, who won a combined 31 games in 2011 and 2012, will make $8 million this season.
Gibbons said he liked what he saw from Morrow in spring training during which the hurler sported a 5.74 ERA in four games (three starts).
In other Blue Jays news, Sergio Santos is out as closer, replaced by left-hander Aaron Loup.
Santos blew his third save on Friday night, allowing three runs on a pair of homers.
The 26-year-old Loup will try to hold down the job until regular stopper Casey Janssen is able to return from an oblique injury.
He owns an impressive 2.62 ERA in 108 major league relief appearances.
