The Toronto Blue Jays previously enjoyed nothing but success in Boston before they had two streaks snapped and lost their best hitter to start the weekend.
The Blue Jays will try and regroup Saturday night (7:10 p.m. ET) and saddle the Red Sox with another home defeat in a start by Clay Buchholz.
Toronto (72-68) was riding a five-game win streak and had a 6-0 record in Boston this year before a frustrating 9-8, 10-inning loss Friday in the opener of this three-game set.
The Blue Jays scored twice in the top of the 10th, but closer Casey Janssen got only one out in the bottom half before the Red Sox (62-79) won on Yoenis Cespedes' RBI single.
"You score those two runs in the top of the 10th there, so you're feeling really good and then bam, bam, bam, bam," Toronto manager John Gibbons said. "Nine times out of 10 we win that game."
Toronto also lost Melky Cabrera to a fractured right pinkie finger. Cabrera, batting a team-high .301, will undergo season-ending surgery.
Boston can relate to the late-inning collapse since Koji Uehara blew a one-run lead in Thursday's 5-4 loss to the New York Yankees. Manager John Farrell installed Edward Mujica as the closer before Friday's game and he pitched a scoreless ninth with the score tied.
The Red Sox have dropped nine of 11 home starts by Buchholz (6-8, 5.40 ERA), who is 2-6 with a 7.20 ERA in those games. The Blue Jays have also won the last six times they have faced him at Fenway Park. The right-hander is 0-4 with a 5.30 ERA in those outings, including 0-2 with a 10.24 ERA in two this season.
Jose Reyes is a .304 hitter against Buchholz, who has limited Edwin Encarnacion to three hits in 26 at-bats. Little-known Ryan Goins could get a start since he is 6 for 11 against him.
Buchholz won for the first time in eight starts Sunday, tossing a three-hitter for a 3-0 victory at Tampa Bay.
Boston ended an eight-game home slide Friday as star second baseman Dustin Pedroia went 2 for 5 in his first game back after missing five with a concussion.
Cespedes, acquired July 31 from Oakland, recorded his first four-hit game in two seasons. He is hitting .392 over his last 12 games.
"He's proven to us time and time again in RBI situations, he's got a knack for it," Farrell said. "He's aggressive, he's strong and he's got all-field coverage."
Toronto starter J.A. Happ (9-8, 4.37) is 2-0 with a 3.71 ERA in three outings against Boston this year. Pedroia is 2 for 8 with a homer in those games, while Cespedes is 2 for 10 in his career against the left-hander.
Allen Craig entered the season 6 for 10 against Happ but is 0 for 3 in the matchup.
Happ went 0-3 with a 4.04 ERA during a six-outing stretch before he yielded three runs over seven innings Sunday to earn a 4-3 win over the Yankees.
Encarnacion and Jose Bautista went deep Friday, giving the Blue Jays 13 homers at Fenway this year. Encarnacion is 8 for 20 with five homers and 10 RBIs in four 2014 games there.
